Types of Eye Diseases

The main eye diseases are glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, dry eye, and cataracts. Glaucoma is an issue that stems from damage to the optic nerve, usually caused by fluid build-up in your eye. One form of it doesn't cause any symptoms at first besides gradual vision loss, but the other form can cause visual disturbances and nausea. Diabetic retinopathy occurs as a result of damage to the retina from uncontrolled blood sugar levels and causes blurred or possibly impaired color vision.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and stems from retina deterioration. This condition can cause partial vision loss, vision abnormalities, blurred vision, and an inability to see in dimly lit areas. Cataracts, on the other hand, occur when you have a clouding over the lens of your eye, making your vision appear cloudy or fuzzy. Everything you see may look blurred, and it can make seeing at night difficult.

When you have dry eye, you either have an inadequate amount or poor quality tears that don't hydrate your eyes adequately. You might notice your eyes appear red, and they feel irritated. You could see halos around lights.

Causes of Eye Diseases

One of the main reasons for conditions like glaucoma, dry eye, macular degeneration, and cataracts is age. The only individuals who develop diabetic retinopathy are those with diabetes. Glaucoma arises when the fluid builds up in your eye, usually as a result of poor drainage or an overproduction of fluid. With many of these eye conditions like cataracts, you’re more prone to it if you have a family history of it.

Diagnosing and Managing Eye Conditions

In order to diagnose your eye condition, we usually take a visual acuity test. Our optometrist also performs a test that checks the pressure in your eye and may use a device to look inside your eye to check for damage.

The treatment of your condition is often prescription eyewear. In addition, we may prescribe specialized eye drops or give you advice on how to optimize your vision. We continuously monitor the progression of your condition.
