Blepharoplasty (Upper and Lower Lids)
Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is the surgical removal of excess skin, muscle, and fatty tissue from the upper and lower eyelids. This surgery can restore the youthful appearance of your eyes by redefining the upper lid crease and removing the puffy bags below your eyes. In many cases it can help restore upper visual fields and reduce fatigue and strain from constant use of the forehead muscles to keep the eyes open.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic to numb the area around the eyes along with intravenous or oral sedatives. You will be awake during the procedure, but quite relaxed and insensitive to pain. You might feel some tugging and occasional discomfort. People vary greatly in the amount of swelling that occurs after lid surgery. With the use of cold applications and avoidance of aspirin, swelling is usually resolved in 2 to 3 weeks.
As with any surgery, there are potential risks to Blepharoplasty. It is important to be conservative, in order to prevent excessive removal of tissue, which can result in an “overdone” appearance. It is also important to remember that each person reacts differently to surgery and there is always the danger of complications. You can reduce your risks by following the surgeon’s pre and post operative instructions. Potential complications will be discussed by your doctor prior to surgery Blepharoplasty can change your look dramatically, but will not meet unrealistic expectations.
