What Is Pink Eye?

What is pink eye, why do you have it, and what can you do about it? Pink eye is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, a normally-transparent membrane that lines both the white of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelid. Pink eye symptoms commonly include:

  • Itching, burning or other irritating sensations irritation in the eye
  • Swelling of the eyelid
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Watery or thick discharge (depending on the underlying cause)

Conjunctivitis may be related to any of several underlying health challenges. Viral conjunctivitis can be prompted by any number of common viruses, while allergic conjunctivitis may be associated with seasonal pollens or year-round environmental irritants. Acute irritation from a foreign body or injury may also cause conjunctivitis symptoms. Bacterial conjunctivitis often produces a thicker discharge than other types of conjunctivitis. Contamination from contact lenses or eye makeup may make you vulnerable to bacterial conjunctivitis.

It's important to know why you're struggling with conjunctivitis so you can get the appropriate treatment as early as possible. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis can be contagious, threatening the eyes of those around you. While viral conjunctivitis usually resolves on its own within a few weeks, a case that lingers without treatment can eventually cause complications such as scarring of the corneas.

Pink Eye Treatment Options at Spectrum Eye Physicians

Any of our experienced eye doctors at Spectrum Eye Physicians can get to the bottom of your pink eye problem and recommend the right pink eye treatment for your specific case. In addition to examining the afflicted eye, we will discuss your symptoms, any recent events that might have triggered the condition. Short-term relief may involve treating an injury, removing a foreign object, prescribing eye drops to fight infection and cleanse the eye, and recommending warm compresses or other soothing at-home remedies. Strategies for dealing with recurring conjunctivitis threats may include practicing better contact lens or eye makeup hygiene, taking allergy medications, and avoiding specific allergens. Some contact lens wearers may be better off switching from extended-wear or permanent contact lenses to single-use disposable contacts as a means of limiting bacterial exposure.
