Cataract Surgery & Intraocular Lenses
Cataract surgery patients used to be fitted with standard monofocal lenses, which only help patients to see objects in the distance. Thanks to large strides in research and product development within the medical industry, our Bay Area Ophthalmologists are proud to offer our cataract patients the latest proven technology in intraocular lens implants (IOLs).
During cataract surgery, a surgeon removes the eyes internal lens, which has become cloudy. The eye, however, cannot see without this lens, which is responsible for focusing light on the eyes retina where the light signals are picked up and sent to the brain through neural receptors. After removing the lens during surgery, the surgeon then replaces the lens with an IOL implant, which has been selected specifically to fit the patient’s eye. Today’s wide variety of IOL implant options provide patients the luxury of visual acuity correction within the eye. Depending on each patient’s corrective lens prescription, IOLs sometimes eliminate the need for wearing corrective lenses altogether.
Spectrum Eye Physicians’ Selection of IOL Implant Options
We offer our patients a wide selection of IOL implant options. Our ophthalmologists work individually with each patient discussing the patient’s expectations and goals for cataracts surgery. Our selection of IOLs include:
Multifocal Lenses
Multifocal Lenses provide vision correction for patients with presbyopia (both at a distance and up close), eliminating the need for eyeglasses. Depending on our patient’s needs and lifestyle, we can recommend which multifocal lens product will be the best option for the future of their eyesight.
AcrySof IQ ReSTOR IOLs – These IOLs feature difractive optics designed to allow sharp distance vision in a range of lighting.
TECNIS 1-Piece Multifocal IOLs – These multifocal IOLs can be optimized for patients who favor activities which require accurate vision at a range of distances or who prefer activities more easily participated in with optimal up-close vision.
Toric Lenses
Toric Lenses correct visual acuity issues for patients with corneal astigmatism (an irregularly shaped cornea). Toric IOLs, however, are not designed also to correct presbyopia. Patients with astigmatism who require corrective lenses for near vision, will likely still require readers after surgery.
AcrySof IQ Toric IOLs – Astigmatism patients enjoy these IOLs’ reduced dependence on spectacles with vision correction across a wide variety of prescriptions.
TECNIS Toric IOLs – These IOLs correct astigmatism patients’ distance vision and expect high performance in low-light environments.
