Read on to learn more.
Why Won’t My Eyes Stop Watering?
Your tears aren’t just useful for showing emotions; they are actually a critical component to healthy eyes! Tears keep your eyes hydrated, help flush out and remove foreign particles, and even provide nutrition to the surface of your eye.
Normally, your eyes are covered in what’s known as a “tear film.” The amount of moisture present is carefully controlled by an intricate tear duct system that helps excess tears drain from your eyes. Sometimes, these ducts may become obstructed or begin to narrow (a condition known as stenosis), which can impair the ability of your eyes to properly drain fluid. This can lead to excessive tearing and watery discharge from one or both eyes.
Of course, your tearing is associated with other symptoms like eyes that are red, itchy, and swollen, you may be dealing with an eye allergy or eye infection, like a pink eye (conjunctivitis). The only way to know for sure what’s causing your excess tearing is to have your eyes thoroughly examined by an ophthalmologist.
What Treatment Options Are Available For Eyes That Won’t Stop Tearing?
Treatment for excessive tearing depends on the underlying cause, which can be determined by a thorough physical eye exam and patient history intake. Treatment can be as simple and straightforward as prescription eye drops, or it may require some kind of invasive procedure.
Eye surgery to resolve excess tearing can sometimes be done as a minor outpatient procedure, and other times it requires a procedure called lacrimal surgery, which is typically performed in an operating room. During a lacrimal surgery, our Bay Area eye doctor team can explore and if necessary reconstruct the tear duct system to restore normal drainage.
Our team is sure to take the time and care necessary to review all your treatment options so that you’ll feel confident in your ability to make the right informed decision for your own health.
